A Peek into the Gender and Armed Conflict Class COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog This semester I enrolled in a new course offered by SIPA’s Gender a Public Policy Specialization called Gender and Armed Conflict: Contemporary Theory and Practice for Advocates. The course is taught by Lisa Davis who is a Clinical Professor of Law for the Human Rights and Gender Justice Clinic at CUNY School of Law. She has worked extensively in the field of human rights, gender and LGBTQ rights, particularly in conflict and disaster settings. As part of the course, each student is writing a report on a particular human rights issue for women and LGBTQ persons in the context of the ISIS conflict. Our findings will be compiled into three jointly published reports that will be submitted to the international community, specifically The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, The U.N. Security Council, and the International Criminal Court. Our research for these reports also involves interviews with relevant international conflict experts and local advocates working in Iraq and Syria. Professor Davis has been working with international human rights organizations such as MADRE, as well as local organizations in Iraq and Syria to address these issues, and she has several contacts that we can use for these interviews. These interviews will help to inform our analysis so we write a report that accurately reflects the realities on the ground. A couple of weeks ago, two Iraqi advocates came to class to discuss their work and the difficulties they face protecting women and LGBTQ persons in Iraq. We had the opportunity to ask them questions that were relevant to our respective reports, and to discuss what they believed would be most important to include in the report. It was incredible to be able to hear from people that are on the ground providing services for women and LGBTQ persons, and to hear their inspirational stories. We will also have visits from advocates from Syria to discuss their experiences in relation to the ISIS conflict. Professor Davis’s experience as a practitioner has enriched our class and helps to bring our studies out of the theoretical realm and into the real world. Once we are finished with this course, we will be able to say we gained the skills necessary to conduct interviews, and to write a report that will be submitted to an international body. Professor Davis also stresses the importance of remembering that these reports will have a real impact on the advocates in Iraq and Syria that are working every day to protect women and LGBTQ persons. Classes like this are what make the SIPA experience so special. Being able to submit a report to a high level international body on an issue I am particularly passionate about is not your everyday experience in graduate school, and I am honored that I have the opportunity to participate in this process. We retrospectively evaluated the effects of BMI on bleeding, transfusion and in hospital outcomes among Chinese patients who underwent isolated, primary CABG [12-14]. We also collected the results from their clinically available coagulation test to investigate the variations in different BMI classifications. Military men and women are introduced to what is known as the chain of command and the structure in which it is written at each command. Communications is something that we are taught not to take for granted because it could be the difference between losing and saving a life in a given situation. Once retired and transferred into what most military men and women call â€Å"The Civilian World,† I immediately discovered that there is a difference concerning military and civilian communications, the flow, and the concern of controlling that information. Here at DLA document services we have a variety of personnel that come together to produce products for the customer. The accountants manage and handle financial issues, machine workers print and produce the orders, information technology personnel maintain the servers, and management oversees the entire business process. Upon reporting for work here at DLA, I have been privileged to several communication issues that have caused issues, but have been addressed and changes put in place. One of the main issues I discovered was that as the network security engineer, there was no communications between the system administrators working on the servers. There was no sharing of information, which consistently resulted in changes to the system by the system administrators, but no upward communications of these changes through the IT department. The program manager was not informed of the lack of maintenance on the servers and the only concerned seem to be that the systems stay up to produce orders. This line of thinking was unfamiliar to me and I felt it would be a recipe for disaster. â€Å"Information sharing is critical to an organization’s competitiveness and requires a free flow of information among members if the organization is to remain competitive† (JP Hatala and J Lutta, 2008). Although we held a bi-weekly meeting that consisted of minutes from the last meeting and the old business to new business concept, it was clear that it served no purpose and I was determined to change that concept. I introduced the Configuration Control Board (CCB) to the Program Manager and showed her how it would make our meetings more effective by allowing communications to flow from the bottom to the top. Eventually I was able to get the SA’s to fill out a configuration change form and submit that form through the leadership, so that all parties would be aware of any major changes to our systems. We ensure that our transmission and handling of sensitive information is handled discreetly. The protection of our information is controlled on a need-to-know basis, which is the same as when I was in the military. The only concern that I had was sending and receiving emails with sensitive information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and other detailed information via e-mail without encryption. We started ensure that we encrypted our emails to add that extra layer of needed security on sensitive documents. We also started the digital signature initiative that ensures all CCB documents are genuinely signed by each responsible IT department personnel, using our Common Access Cards (CAC). The DoD CAC card allows employees to have their own unique identification, authentication privileges, encrypting, and crypto graphical ability to sign emails and other documents. DLA Document Services Jacksonville delivers quality products to the men and women of our military. Although there were some issues with communications, the improvements have been astounding. We realized that when companies are dealing in the information technology field there is a need for excellent communications amongst team members up, and down the organization so that the best customer service can be provided. We discussed the importance of ensuring that communications is protected and secured because it is the cornerstone of maintaining that need-to-know responsibility. On Saturday November 7, 2009 I had a chance to experience a remarkable exhibit. The museum is called the Michael C Carlos museum. It is located in my hometown of Atlanta Georgia. It is also a part of the Emory Campus. Most of the staff in the museum were students at Emory. The museum had two exhibits you can see. They were Scripture For The Eyes and The Works on Paper Collection. I enjoyed Scripture for the Eyes the most because I have biblical knowledge of the stories being betrayed. Scripture for the Eyes depicted biblical stories. Out of all of them one piece stood out to me the most the exhibition, featuring works by Lucas van Leyden, Maarten van Heemskerck, Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert, and Hieronymus Wierix and many more. The Exhibit explored the ways in which printed illustrations of the Bible and other religious themes. Most of the pieces were engravings and woodcuts. Although confusion is not at great risk in phrases like â€Å"sharp-dressed man† (though the omission of the hyphen suggests that the passage literally refers to a dressed man who is sharp) others, such as â€Å"small-business owner,† can at the very least conjure distracting imagery if they omit the hyphen. And such hyphenated word strings as â€Å"song-and-dance man† and â€Å"customer-relationship-management software† help keep the reader focused, though judiciously relaxing a phrase is often a welcome solution: The former phrase isn’t exhausting to read, but how about â€Å"software for customer-relationship management† in lieu of the latter? On the other hand, sins of commission regarding hyphenation are as endemic as those of omission. Here are examples of superfluous usage: 1. â€Å"Mergers and acquisitions ground to a near-halt in 2001.† â€Å"Near-halt† and its cousins â€Å"near-disaster† and â€Å"near-miss† are results of a misunderstanding: When near modifies another adjective, it should be hyphenated to its teammate (â€Å"near-fatal accident†), but a hyphen serves no use in linking near in isolation directly to a noun. 2. â€Å"The recently-launched firm survived by limiting itself to modestly-scaled projects.† Adverbs ending in -ly never are never hyphenated, though suffix-free adverbs are: â€Å"longer-lasting freshness.† 3. â€Å"The mostly flat paved trail is an inline-skater’s dream.† There was a time when compound nouns that are now open or closed, such as â€Å"income tax† or â€Å"taskmaster,† were likely to be hyphenated.
